Chelsea thumped Aston Villa 8-0 at Stamford Bridge today, earning Rafa Benitez his first Premier League win at Stamford Bridge in spectacular fashion.
David Luiz was again handed a start in the new central midfield role, and received the man of the match award from Sky Sports pundits. Luiz started in midfield next to Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, who was making his 500th Premier League start.
Chelsea completely dominated Villa in the first-half, taking a 3-0 lead in at the break thanks to a Fernando Torres header, a great David Luiz free-kick and with the third coming from Branislav Ivanovic.
Chelsea did not stop the onslaught in the second half, with Lampard capping his 500th PL start with the fourth goal, before being substituted for Ramires and given a standing ovation on the hour-mark.
Lampards’s replacement added a fifth after a great ball from youngster Lucas Piazon, with Ramires netting through Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan’s legs.
Oscar earned and then scored a penalty to make it 6-0, before Hazard and Ramires net to make it 7-0 and then finally 8-0 to end the game.
What a great performance from the Chelsea boys, with 7 different goalscorers getting on the scoresheet. It could have been 9 if Lucas Piazon had scored the penalty he had earned around the 90th minute, which was well saved by Brad Guzan, who had originally dived to the bottom corner and just managed to stick his arm upwards to deny the young Brazilian. Is anybody feeling the ‘eight’ for Benitez tonight?
