Edinson Cavani has reportedly agreed to a deal to return to his former club, Atlético Madrid [TuttoMercatoWeb]. He hasn’t been able to live up to the expectation at Paris Saint-Germain, playing behind Zlatan Ibrahimović. He has scored five less goals than the Swedish international, despite appearing in nine more matches. Cavani has been heavily linked to Arsenal, Manchester United, and most recently Chelsea. At Chelsea, he would be used as a substitute to Diego Costa, but Costa has been struggling with a hamstring injury all year, and surgery might be required this summer. If Diego Costa would be absent a significant amount next season, then Chelsea will have to upgrade from Loïc Rémy and Didier Drogba, who have disappointed this season.

Paris Saint-Germain President has recently commented on a possible Cavani transfer,

“As for Cavani, I’ve not met him yet, but he’s still young, he’s the future of the club. He just needs more confidence, but he showed his talent in the last game. He’ll be here again next year. We won’t even consider any offers,” said Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

But if Cavani is on his way to Atlético, then surely Antoine Griezmann or Mario Mandžukić are on their way out. Griezmann, has been linked to a move to Stamford Bridge, and has a release clause at £43.5million, which would be about £10million more than Cavani will cost. Griezmann would be a wonderful signing for Mourinho, because he can also play on the wing. An attack consisting of Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, and Antoine Griezmann would be very scary, one of the best attacks in the world.

José should certainly look to add another striker, but Griezmann or Cavani could be too expensive. Cheaper options include Danny Ings, Charlie Austin, Mauro Icardi, and Douglas Costa. Charlie Austin, who currently ranks fourth in the Premier League in goals scored, would be an amazing signing to backup Diego Costa. He is one of the most prolific strikers in England, and he would be willing to leave Queens Park Rangers to join fellow Englishmen John Terry and Gary Cahill at Stamford Bridge.

No matter what, Chelsea supporters are in for a very interesting summer, with all kinds of links to unique players.
