Has Martin O'Neill resigned after Chelsea drubbing?

There are numerous reports and rumours circulating saying that Martin O’Neill has resigned as manager of Aston Villa after seeing his side destroyed 7-1 by Chelsea this weekend. The club are refusing to comment but it has been privately stated that the rumours are “pure nonsense”.

After the Chelsea match O’Neill announced that he took full resposibilty for the defeat. He said: “The buck stops with me,”

“It is my responsibility, it is as simple as that and we have got a week now to prepare for Bolton [Wanderers] and a week after that the semi-final.

“Thankfully we don’t have any midweek games now for a little while – but that would sound like the number of games we’ve played is an excuse.

“Please don’t even go there – that was nothing to do with whether we had a midweek game or not.

“We’ve shown a lot more desire and a lot more character than we did against Chelsea and that is totally my responsibility.

“Whatever you say about performances and it is all very well talking about the players, that is down to me and that is my responsibility.”

The rumours said that O’Neill had had a bust-up with Villa owner Randy Lerner when he told him that he needed more transfer funds to strengthen the side, and, in reponse, William Hill have slashed the odds on O’Neill being the next Premiership manager to part company with his club, from 66/1 to 7/1.

Whatever the truth, it would seem that life is not very rosy at the moment in Villa Park.
