As speculations surrounding the future of Nigerian midfielder, Mikel Obi, at the Stamford bridge continues to be in the news and look uncertain, his long-time agent and fellow country man, John Shittu, has refused to confirm if Real Madrid has contacted him concerning a move for the African Nations cup winner. The transfer window opens soon for sales and loans towards next summer, and Madrid wanting Mikel has been a surprise news to many. Concerning this, his agent has this to say,
“I cannot talk about anything regarding reports linking Mikel with Real Madrid, because he is still a Chelsea player”
This is coming after the 28 years old former boss, Carlos Ancelloti is reportedly planning a move for the defensive midfielder. But looking at the quality of the star-studded Galacticos, Mikel has no place in Madrid’s first team, and an eventual-move to Spain is likely to see him relegated to the bench, just like he has been in Chelsea. He has made just 12 appearances for Chelsea in the league this season, after having lost his starting berth to Matic. And with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, the pairing midfielders at Bernabeu, still on excellent forms, the Nigerian’s chances of breaking into the team remains wide and very uncertain.
Mikel has only a goal to his credit in all his 217 appearances for the club, since joining them in 2006. Although, he was instrumental in winning the Champions League and F.A cup for the Ancelloti-led side back in the 2011/2012 season, his performances in recent seasons has dwindled, and he has fallen out of favour with Mourinho as a result. He is being seen as an excess at the club, and he is ready to be sold off to the Spain capital as soon as an offer is made. This is in order for the blues to strengthen their team, and make space for incoming players that are being targeted for a move once the transfer window opens.
