According to many reports from the Italian media, Chelsea have stepped up their interest in highly rated Germany under-23 star Antonio Rudiger as the club reportedly sees him as the long term replacement for John Terry.
Rudiger who is currently with the German senior team preparing for the 2016 European Championship has only last week made his loan move to AS Roma permanent after spending a year with the Rome club. Roma simply activated their option to make the deal a permanent one for just £7m and could now be set to make profit on him if they agree to sell him to Chelsea.
Chelsa are reportedly ready to pay as much as £20 million to sign him from Roma which will give the Italians a quick £13 million profit. With Roma reportedly in a financial mess at the moment, they may be forced to sell some of their players which will work nicely in Chelsea’s favour.
Reports from Italy claim Rudiger is one of the players Roma are comfortable to let go in order for them to solve their financial problems and avoid UEFA throwing them out of all European Competitions. According to Il Tempo, Roma have told Chelsea they are ready to do business for the right price. Which explains why various Bookmakers have shorten the odds on Rudiger joining Chelsea before the end of the transfer window. The Blues have already been linked with the signing of Kostas Manolas but one can understand why they would want to sign Rudiger as he is a cheaper option and equally very good and younger. With Rudiger just 23-year-old, he won’t mind playing as an understudy to John Terry and then take over from the Chelsea legend at the end of the 2016/2017 season.
