That Chelsea needs another player to act as partner or back up for Nemanja Matić is a well known fact among pundits and Chelsea fans alike. To this end, Chelsea has been linked to several players who are capable of playing the defensive midfield role. Geoffrey Kondogbia has in particular been constantly linked to the blues with reports claiming the Frenchman will join Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of £25 million.
However, newer reports have claimed the midfielder will not be moving to the stamford bridge in the summer as he prefers to stay with Monaco for at least one more season. To this end, Chelsea have reportedly started making moves to convince Real Madrid and German international midfielder Sami Khedira to sign for the blues in the summer.
The 28 year old midfielder is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with Real Madrid and will be available for free in the summer which means Chelsea will not have to pay Real Madrid any transfer fee.
However, considering the player is injury prone, Chelsea needs to act with caution. Also, considering he is already 28 years, his wage demands of £150,000 per week may be a big problem. He will be an expensive free transfer if you consider a player of his status will also want a big sign on fee.
Although a very good player, I personally think Chelsea needs to look elsewhere for a defensive midfielder due to Khedira age, injury proneness and wage demands.
