With the thrilling Premier League campaign about to near its climax, football fans and media outlets are beginning to speculate about the upcoming transfer window. Affectionately named “silly season” the transfer window is mainly built on rumours and very little hard facts are revealed until the last few days leading up to Jim White’s Christmas – Deadline Day.
This however is not the case for youth transfers, where the rules are slightly skewed and a team can sign a player at any time of the season. Chelsea are set to sign Brazilian “wonderkid” Nathan de Souza at a fee of £4.5m – quite a large sum for a youth player. This makes you believe that Chelsea’s intentions are not simply to stick this player with the youth team, but to nab him early and promote him very quickly into the senior squad in time for next season.
Nathan who was under 17 world cup quarter finalist with Brazil in 2013 has undergone a medical at Chelsea and has been tweeting about his experiences and excitement alongside a lot of blue emojis. This transfer seems to have been no secret on his part. Manchester City are a side that had also hoped to secure his signature but with the players enthusiasm for Chelsea it seems that they have missed out.
Nathan plays as an attacking midfielder and could be an ample replacement for Oscar, whom is believed to be on his way out this summer. He just turned 19, and having played for Atletico Paranaense since 2009 it seems he is looking for a new step in his career. He turned down a contract renewal in October perhaps due to the interest of big Premier League sides.
Nathan has represented his home nation of Brazil at youth level and already has 19 caps to his name. He will fit in well with the strong Brazilian contingency in Chelsea who will help the young player to feel at home.
Chelsea are due to announce the signing of Nathan at any time now.
