When Didier Drogba was leaving Stamford bridge at the end of the 2011/2012 season, after having spent 8 seasons with the Blues, many Chelsea faithfuls were heartbroken to see him leave. In 226 league appearances and a 100 goals, Drogba had attained the legend status, and was treated like one even when he came as an opposition while at Galatasaray. But just 3 seasons after his glorious exit from the Stamford bridge, Drogba was back again, at the invitation of the Special One, a testimonial of the good relationship both shared.
His second-stint with the Blues hasn’t been filled with great and superb performances like his former, nothing much was expected of a 37 year-old. Mourinho brought him back for 2 reasons: to serve as a backup cum cover for the forwards, and to act as an inspiration and model in the dressing room. It can’t be denied that both goals have been accomplished. He has gone ahead to inspire the side to a League title in 5 years, and has played 26 League games, scoring 4 goals and making an assist. He probably did more than required, as he was called up for more than half of the season to man the attack while Costa and Remy were sidelined due to injury.
But with Chelsea’s style of not offering aged players not more than a year deal, it is been suggested that he won’t be staying another season at the Stamford bridge. Many have pointed at the fact that he could hang the boots at the end of the season, but the “Drog” wants to play one more season, at Chelsea or MLS. The board will however decide his fate before the transfer window opens. Chelsea refused to let Lampard and Ashley Cole stay more than a season after it was obvious they were past their prime. But Drogba is just in a class of his own in the Chelsea’s legend school, and he could just inspire the team to a Champions League trophy if allowed to stay one more season.
