In the last few weeks, Chelsea have been linked to several Atletico Madrid players which includes Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann and Koke. According to many reports, Chelsea’s Michael Emenalo had flown to Spain to hold talks with Atletic to complete the signing of the trio but no word has been heard on the reported trip.
However, three days ago news broke that Chelsea may be signing Antoine Griezmann after Atletico Madrid reportedly identified Luciano Vietto of Villarreal as potential replacement for the Frenchman. Newer reports claim Super Agent Jorges Mendes has been dragged into the team.
Mendes has close ties with not just Jose Mourinho but as well as the Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich having in the past help the club sign the likes of Andre Shevencko and Diego Costa. According to Spainish media outlet El Confidencial, Mendes has been brought into the deal to ensure it is finalised as quick as possible.
Griezmann who was signed by Atletico last summer in a deal said to be worth £24 million has been a relevation for Atletico Madrid this season having been pushed upfront as the centre forward from his normal role on the wing or in the midfield. He reportedly has a release clause of €65m (£47m) inserted into his contract.
El Confidencial’s reporter who is reporting this news claims Diego Simeone has made it clear he will not try to stop a deal from happening provided Atletico Madrid lets him use some of the funds to get in a reliable replacement.
