If you believe Metro, Liverpool have opened talks in a bid to sign Chelsea target Christian Benteke. Chelsea have been linked to the high rated Belgian but if Metro are to be believed, Liverpool have put themselves in the front of the queue for the player’s signature.
Jose Mourninho has been reported to be keen on signing the big Belgian after it emerged Drogba will not be staying with the blues for another year. Benteke who has scored 13 goals in 29 league games for Villa this season with 11 of those games coming in his last 11 games for a rejuvenated Aston Villa side has always been linked to Chelsea even before now. Just before he signed his current contract with Villa, Benteke was thought to be on his way to Chelsea but he ended up penning a new deal with Aston Villa instead. The form of the Belgian in the last few weeks has not gone unnoticed.
Manchester United, Arsenal and the aforementioned duo have all been linked to the signing of the 24 million rated striker. However, judging by Jose Mourinho’s long standing interest in the player and the fact that Chelsea are in the Champions league, I think Chelsea have a good chance of hijacking the deal from Liverpool if Mourinho so wants.
Liverpool have no champions league football to offer and considering Benteke had made it clear in the past, he will like to play in the champions league, Chelsea will feel they have a strong advantage. Also, he is currently on a reported £60,000-a-week contract which shouldn’t be too tough for Chelsea to double and considering Liverpool’s precarious situation, double of £60,000-a-week seems beyond the reds.
