Chelsea have been given the green light to swoop for Shaktar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa after the player hinted of his desire to work with Jose Mourinho.
“Eventually the time comes when you get tired of playing always in the same league,
he said.
I’m 24 years old and it is worth trying to tell people that I want to go.
We have a wonderful coach in Mircea Lucescu, but I think it’s time for a change and I think Mourinho is the best in the world.”
Costa made no secret of his desire to move to Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window , and the Brazil international is determined to secure a transfer this summer in order to link up with former Shakhtar teammate Willian and compete for trophies in Mourinho’s side.
The reported price tag of 20m is on the low side for a player as talented as Costa, but Shakhtar were always expected to be in a selling mood entering the transfer market due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Costa’s talent is undeniable, but where he fits into Jose Mourinho’s starting XI is more of a question mark. He seems like more of a luxury purchase at this point in time, but for a team that already has talent across the pitch, fortifying the bench with another gifted scorer is never a bad thing.
