OFFICIAL – Manager Confirm £50m Chelsea Transfer Could Be Done

That Chelsea could do with another defensive midfielder to partner Nemanja Matić is an open secret. Many Chelsea fans are secretly hoping manager Jose Mourinho will address the defensive midfield role once the summer transfer window opens and judging by the quotes attributed to Everton manager Robert Martinez, Chelsea fans and Jose Mourinho may get their wish.

Chelsea has long been linked with Everton’s Ross Barkley who is rated as one of the biggest prospects in the English game. Although he is more of an attacking midfielder, he has recently be used as a box to box midfielder and standing DM. As a matter of fact, many pundits see him more as a defensive midfielder/box to box midfielder than a 10 type of midfielder.

Speaking to the press yesterday, Robert Martinez confirmed Everton would sanction a deal if the right offer is put in for the Englishman as such transfer deals would then allow him to make the right move in the transfer market come July.

‘I don’t want to sell the dream, “Oh, we need to keep these players”, because that’s not modern football,’ he said on the Sky Sports website.

‘If you are going to lose a player as a club you need to become stronger at the end of it by investing the money well and the recruitment needs to be right.

‘I feel excited about those players coming through but that doesn’t mean we put all the future on those young players staying at the club.’

Reportedly available for £50 million, Barkley is the type of signing Chelsea could do with right now. With Oscar reportedly on his way out of the door, Chelsea could do with a like for like replacement and Barkley’s versatility makes it even better. However, I do not see how Chelsea will sanction a move for him at £50 million. He is a good player no doubt, but definitely not as good as to command £50 million even in the current inflated transfer market.

Should Everton come down on their demands, I will definitely like to see Ross Barkley at Chelsea.
