Even though Raul Meireles had been mentioned in dispatches about a move to Chelsea during the summer, it still came as a surprise to many when he did sign for the club late on Wednesday evening.
The Portuguese International has been speaking about his move south and said, “It all happened very fast.”
Meireles had only been at Liverpool for just over a year and he hopes that the fans there do not hold any grudges against him for moving to Chelsea. He said, “These are things that happen in football. I can only say good things about Liverpool, it was a fantastic year. People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money. It was not because of that, I will explain it later, things are still fresh.”
He finished off by saying, “I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool, but I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there. The most important thing is to give my all every time and try to help Chelsea win titles.”
Meireles had a great second half of the season scoring numerous important goals for Liverpool, none more so than the winner at Stamford Bridge when Liverpool won 1-0 back in February. Blues fans will be hoping he shows that form for his new club, but it may be a while before he pulls on his new number 16 shirt as he is recovering from a shoulder injury he picked up in his last game for Liverpool.
