Chelsea is recently been reported to be highly interested in signing Atlético Madrid midfielder, Koke this summer [DiMarzio]. The 23 year-old Spaniard has proven himself to be one of the best young midfielders in European football, scoring twice and assisting nine for the La Liga side this season. As a result of his scintillating performances this season, he has attracted interest from some of Europe’s largest clubs, most notably Manchester United. José Mourinho is ready to go head to head with Louis van Gaal for the signature of the Spaniard, but Mourinho will most likely have the upper hand. With a £44million release clause, Koke would be extremely expensive, especially with today’s new Financial Fair Play regulations.
After signing Filipe Luís from the Vincente Calderon last summer, he has not made an impact in Mourinho’s squad, and has been rumored to return to his former club, and could be used in a swap deal for Koke. Chelsea would like to send Luís and £30million to Atlético Madrid for Koke, hoping that would be enough to convince them to let their star leave.
With Oscar’s rumored move to Juventus, probably has a large role in this deal. If Oscar was to leave this summer, after practically disappearing after Christmas, then Mourinho will surely look to bring in Koke or Paul Pogba. Koke would fit the role better than Pogba, whose natural trade is playing in the holding midfield position. Either player would be a great signing, both world-class footballers with years to improve. Even if Oscar does not leave, another attacking midfielder would be needed, because there is not a sure backup for Oscar, besides Juan Cuadrado who has been a bitter disappointment after signing this January.
Mourinho is looking to be in for another active summer, attempting to strengthen his grip on the Premier League title, and hoping to lead his team to a Champions League title as well. Adding Koke could certainly elevate this Chelsea side to new levels, and a team consisting of Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Willian, Koke and Cesc Fàbregas would be absolutely amazing to watch.
