Few weeks ago there were reports that Chelsea’s director of football Michael Emenalo had flown to Spain to try negotiate a deal to sign Chelsea reported target Koke from Atletico Madrid in a deal reported to be worth £40 million. However, new reports have emerged that Chelsea are interested in signing another player from Atletico Madrid rather than Koke.
Metro are reporting Chelsea actually want Koke’s team mate Antonie Griezmann. The report claim Chelsea are hoping to complete a deal to sign the player for £43.5 million. This is not the first time the high rated Frenchman is being linked with a move to Chelsea. He was constantly rumoured to be the subject of a bid from Chelsea in the summer just before he moved from Real Sociedad to Atletico Madrid for a reported £24 million deal.
Although metro did not state Michael Emenalo flew to Spain for Griezmann, it is however likely to be the case if Chelsea are truly interested in signing Griezmann and to be honest, signing Griezmann will make more sense than signing Koke.
For one, Griezmann is more versatile than Koke. Griezmann can play for Chelsea as a striker ( which is one role Chelsea urgently need to fill ) when the usual hamstring problem known with Diego Costa resurfaces. He can also play as a second striker whenever Jose Mourinho decides he needs another striker on the field of play. He is also able to play on both sides of the wing while Koke on the other side can play on both wings and centrally in the box to box role.
Griezmann’s record of 22 goals and one assist in 32 games in la liga for Atletico Madrid is a big testament to why Chelsea should ensure he is signed. He will be especially more needed if the rumours of Oscar leaving the club in the summer ends up as true.
