Since the self-acclaimed special one returned to work under Russian owner, Roman Abramovich in the summer of 2013, he has given the impression he doesn’t want to be considered a mercenary anymore.
The Portuguese is famed for bringing short term success to the clubs he has handled all over Europe, in Portugal, in England, Italy and Spain. He has never spent more than three years at any of the clubs he has coached.
At various times since his return to the Chelsea dug out, he has spoken of how he wants to stay for a long time and even calling himself the ‘Happy One’ at his unveiling. One suspects he is looking to build a dynasty and leave indelible marks at Stamford Bridge just like Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have done at Old Trafford and the Emirates respectively.
He has since won two trophies; the Capital One cup and the league titles last season. To say that things have gone pear shaped this season is understating the fact. The whole football community still can’t explain how a team that won the league at a canter is currently a point above the relegation zone after their ninth defeat of the season to surprise league leaders, Leicester City.
So it comes as a bit of a surprise to hear him talking about the future when he has not sorted out the mess of the present. Hear him, ‘If Chelsea gives me a 10-year contract, I sign. I am saying the normal situation is, when you have a contract, you wish to go to the end of that contract’. Really Jose!
Whether this is Mou pleading for more time from the owner or one of his famous mind games where he gives the press something to talk about, deflecting attention from his team’s performance, it’s anybody’s guess.
