The cycle Abramovic started at Chelsea when he brought Drogba, trying to follow his dream to win the Champions League, seems to have run its course and be now ready for another chapter, in a very poetic way.
Drogba brought the change at Chelsea, and he took things as far as winning the Champions League for the first time in history, alongside the likes of Lampard and Terry, and now the Ivorian is readying himself to let go and move on.
“We will not be together next season,” Drogba told France Football magazine.
“As I have decided to leave, I wanted to tell them my team-mates straight to their faces.
“Except that I could not do it. They made me break down.
“Even though it’s been three years since I said I wanted to leave, I found it hard to admit that it was finished with me and the club.
“But I don’t envisage sitting on the bench watching others play at a time when the club is looking at putting together a new team.
“So there we go, I am readying myself for a great leap into the unknown. It will be another adventure.”
Lampard and Terry will soon have to face the same faith, but at least their hard work and determination were not in vain, and they can proud themselves for not giving up after the very unfortunate failures they had against the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United. Drogba leaves Chelsea, but he also leaves behind a legacy and a host of supporters who were feeling goosebumps every time the giant striker got the ball.
Drogba will be for Chelsea what Henry is for Arsenal, and every striker who will play for the club from now on will be compared with “The Drog”, and very few will be able to mean as much for the supporters as he does. Thank you Didier!
