Villas-Boas calls for unity in this "negative time"

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat in the hands of Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, Blues’ manager Andre Villas-Boas has called for unity as he seeks to turn the clubs fortune around after a poor run of 4 defeats in 7 games in all competitions.

The Portugese coach said “In football you live in the moment, and Chelsea’s moment is negative. We have to avert the bad results and get into a dynamic of victory.

“It’s not about what I expect, it’s about Chelsea’s expectations. Chelsea’s expectations are titles, and at the moment there is no title to play for. At the moment the negatives are all out exposed, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the character to change it.”

Villas-Boas, who was sign from FC Porto in July by owner Roman Abramovich for an expensive £13 million, is now facing an uphill task to bond his team, which consists of members of the old guard that dates all the way back to the Mourinho’s era, and fresher players that are brought in from the last few transfer windows, more notably Fernando Torres who have a grand total of 4 goals scored for Chelsea ever since he joined in the last January transfer windows.

Reports have also surfaced that the club now faces warring cliques that have been formed within the players, and that players are now fighting against each other. This news has surfaced too much criticism against the young Portuguese boss, and some have also questioned his ability in controlling and reining in the gigantic egos in the squad.

Chelsea face a tough 2 weeks ahead. After playing a must-win game with Wolves tomorrow, they will face Liverpool once again in the Quarter-Finals of the Carling Cup. And it will not help Villas-Boas that the Blues will also be facing crucial Champions League game against Valencia, where their qualification chances still hang by the balance.

If Chelsea wants to get their season back on track again, unity is certainly an issue that needs to be resolved quickly. With a good team spirit, there is no doubt that their individual talents will click with each other and start their winning ways again.
