With Chelsea looking to add a few more players to their players, with their defence one of the departments that needs shoring up (not that the pairing of Terry and Cahill was porous, rather with Terry aging). Reports today is that Chelsea are to part with £14 million in other to sign one of their target, Toby Alderweireld who spent last season on loan at Southampton. The Belgian is also the subject of interest from Southampton who were impressed by his display during his time with them. Apparently Chelsea were impressed with him as well and are keen to add him to their squad.
Should Chelsea sign Alderweireld, then Atletico Madrid will have to pay Southampton the sum of £3 million, this is due to the clause in the defender’s loan that states that should Alderweireld move to any club aside Southampton, they would be paid £3 million.
The 26 year old Belgian has been a revelation for Southampton this season. Aiding the club to a place in the Europa league, he turned out for the club 25 times in the league. Should he eventually make his way to Chelsea, he will be joining up with a former collegue from Atletico Madrid in the person of Diego Costa and he will be the 3rd individual to make a switch from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea within the last 1 year.
