The Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka scored the only goal of Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Porto in the first Group Stage match on Tuesday night, and believes that his team have the quality to go all the way to final again this year, but they need just that little bit of luck to go with the quality of the side.
Anelka has already won a Champions League medal when he played with Real Madrid early in his career, but he thinks he will appreciate it more if he does the same thing with Chelsea.
“Did I really appreciate what it meant to win the Champions League when we won it at Real Madrid when I was still a young player? Yes and no,” Anelka said.
“It’s a huge competition and when you win it early in your career, maybe you don’t realise it so much. And we won it in Paris, my home city, so it all seemed to fit.
“But if I was to win it again, I would appreciate it a little bit more because when you are more experienced, you probably have more feelings about what you have achieved.
“I never tease the other players or joke with them that I have won the Champions League before – we want to win it altogether, as a team, because we know what it would mean to this club.
“And I would love to be a part of the final this season because it is in Madrid, so it would be special to go back there to try and win the European Cup for Chelsea.
“We have the squad, and the team, to win this competition – now we need a little bit of luck. It’s a long campaign and anything can happen in Europe, so we’ll have to see how it unfolds this time.”
