Burnley were finally relegated today as Liverpool over-ran them at Turf Moor. Steven Gerrard scored the first two and then Maxi Rodriguez and Ryan Babel finished them off, to give Liverpool some confidence ahead of their return leg against Atletico Madrid in midweek, and the grudge match against League leaders Chelsea next weekend.
Both managers only had praise for the Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Brian Laws said: “The scoreline doesn’t reflect the performance,”
“They took their chances and we didn’t take ours, and that’s probably the story of the season for us. Today reflects the gulf in quality and Gerrard’s second goal showed real quality.”
“I am really pleased for Stevie,” Rafael Benítez agreed. “It is important when you don’t have players like Fernando Torres, who normally scores, that you have players like Stevie.”
