Chelsea have been strongly linked with a big money move for Tottenham’s classy midfielder Luka Modric, but the Croatian playmaker has stopped them in their tracks by signing an incredible SIX-year contract at White Hart Lane.
Modric admitted that he had offers from other top clubs, but he feels happy with the way Spurs are going with Harry Redknapp, and wanted to commit his whole playing career to Spurs.
Tottenham gave me my chance in the Premier League and I want to go on to achieve great success here with them,” Modric said.
“Yes, there have been enquiries from other big clubs, but I have no interest in going anywhere.
“Last season’s top-four finish was an indication of where we are as a club. I feel I can achieve everything I want at Spurs.”
It is reported that his new contract is worth £60,000 a week, so top marks to him for loyalty, because I am certain he could have got a bigger pay packet somewhere else (like Chelsea!)
But it seems that Chelsea have arranged a top-class alternative in Modric’s Croatian team-mate and captain Dario Srna. The 28 year-old said last week that Chelsea would suit his style of play perfectly, and now he seems to think he is close to signing for the Blues, once he gets the agreement of Shakhtar’s president.
“The deal is not done yet.” he told reporters.
“I must get together with the Shakhtar president as we cannot discuss such matters over the phone.”
He is certainly rated very highly by his country, and is also well experienced. I would just be surprised if Chelsea sign another 28 year-old but let Joe Cole (who is the same age) leave on a free transfer…..
