Chelsea look to add Mo midfield options to squad

Chelsea look into the possibility of adding West Ham’s Mohamed Diamé to our squad, according to the Daily Mail.

The Senegal international was a constant hassle during the Hammers 3-1 win over the Blues, in which he came on as a half-time substitute and changed the game. He also got his name on the scoresheet.

Arsenal are said to also be keen on his signature, which is thought to cost around £3.5million due to a release clause in his contract.

Chelsea have been linked with moves for defensive midfield cover, with John Obi Mikel missing a possible 6 weeks at the African Cup of Nations which starts this weekend, as well as the injury to Romeu which will see him miss most of the remaining season.

I do not believe Diamé is a likely target however. Having 2 defensive midfielders from Africa could leave Chelsea short every January when the African Cup of Nations is played. Diamé’s international team may not have qualified this year, but generally Senegal, who Demba Ba also represents, usually do qualify.

If Chelsea were still in the hunt for a defensive midfielder, then Paulinho or Marouane Fellaini would be high on their list, with both players being heavily linked with the club in the past 6 months. I am hoping Fellaini, who claims his best position is defensive midfield, will join our squad before the months end. He is a very strong, creative midfielder who can play anywhere in the middle of the park. Diamé or Fellaini? there is no competition

Chelsea should look no further than European players, and forget about signing players from the African continent. The African Nations Cup comes around way too often. Players that command massive wages in Europe should be docked, as they’re of no use to their club whilst away on international duty. Essien is a prime example, the African Nations tournament ruined him as he’s never been the same player since his injury. African players are great bargain buys, but they don’t come without their problems.
