Chelsea boss Villas-Boas is looking to bring in some competition for defenders David Luiz and John Terry. There have been rumours that the Blues are interested in Inter’s Lucio and Bolton’s Gary Cahill. Now Real Madrid’s Pepe has been identified as a possible new acquisition.
According to the Metro Chelsea are willing to offer Pepe a salary worth £4.5 million per year if he comes to Stamford Bridge. But if he does make the move he will not be guaranteed to play in defence and may be used in midfield.
Villas-Boas thinks Pepe can better function as a holding midfielder, which he did in several games against Barcelona last season.
Meanwhile another Chelsea target looks unlikely to join them. Benfica full-back Fabio Coentrao stormed out of a training session after learning that his club had accepted an offer for him from the Blues. In stead he has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid. However Madrid are not prepared to accept the £25 million asking price Benfica have set.
