After releasing Jose Bosingwa at the end of this month, Chelsea will have only one out and out right back, Paulo Ferreira, and he is for sale. Branislav Ivanovic can do the job but he is better in the centre of defence. That is why Roberto Di Matteo is doing everything he can to sign a new right back sooner rather than later.
The Chelsea boss has already made enquiries about Manchester United’s Rafael, according to Metro, but has been told to back off. So he is left with a choice of three players that we know about. All three have just featured in Euro 2012 and caught the eye.
24-year old Dutchman Gregory van der Weil has played for Ajax since beginning his career and has become a mainstay of the team. He has made 127 league appearances and scored 11 goals. He won the Young Player of the Year award and helped Ajax to the Dutch title. He has already got 35 international caps. Having started Euro 2012 well, he was gutted by Holland’s early exit and is hungry for success.
26-year old Mathieu Debuchy is also a one club man, having played for Lille since 2003 and making 213 league appearances, scoring 15 goals. He is lightning fast and can also play as a midfielder. After impressing in his first two games he had a bit of a nightmare against Sweden but was played out of position.
27-year old Lukasz Piszczek has had two great seasons since moving to Borussia Dortmund. His 63 league appearances and four goals helped Dortmund to back to back titles. For me, he looked the most complete right back of the three, but he is also the oldest. Still, at 27 there are plenty of years left in him.
Over to you Robbo.
