Now that Chelsea look likely to overturn the transfer ban imposed by FIFA for the poaching of Gael Kakuta, the Sunday papers are starting to add more and more stars to January’s shopping list.
With Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou certain to be joining the Ivory Coast team, Carlo Ancelotti is desperate for another top class striker to partner Nicolas Anelka while they are away.
As Valencia have indicated that their star man David Villa is likely to be sold to balance the books, the News of the World say that Chelsea are preparing a £25m move to take the prolific Spain international striker to Stamford Bridge.
Villa recently sacked his agent, and the reason given in the press was that the luckless manager failed to secure a big money move for Villa in the summer.
The agent kept releasing stories saying that Villa only wanted to move to another Spanish club, but neither Barcelona or Real Madrid were willing to meet Valencia’s asking price, so Villa was left in limbo.
With Villa doing his own negotiations, it will be a lot easier for Chelsea to broker a deal with the Spanish hitman, but they will probably need to increase the £25m offer to get him.
It is thought that Rafael Benitez desperately still needs Villa as a partner for Fernando Torres, but he can’t compete financially with Chelsea, and he will be even more restricted if Liverpool don’t reach the play-off stages of the Champions League.
The same paper says that Chelsea are interested in signing the Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik, who has been in awesome form in Italy .
The 22 year-old Slovakian international would be a more than adequate replacement for Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel, who will also be departing for the African Nations Cup in January, and is expected to cost around £18-20m.
I assure you he is worth every penny!
