The Chelsea transfer rumours are still coming in thick and fast, although everyone is still unsure of whether their transfer ban will be suspended or not.
But it seems that Frank Arnesen has been trying to make his mark in his new job by recommending lots of Portugese players, but the main one seems to be the Benfica winger Angel Di Maria who was instrumental in their 5-0 destruction of Everton recently.
The news today is that Di Maria has actually stated that he would be keen on a move to the Premiership, after being told that Chelsea were considering a £15m bid for him in January.
I’m not sure why Chelsea would need another winger just now, no matter how good he is. We still have Malouda, and the (albeit always injured) Yuri Zhirkov, and Joe Cole has just come back from injury as well.
On top of that, Ancelotti’s system mostly uses the full backs as wingers, and the midfielders stay in the center. But this rumour does seem to have been building up for a few weeks, so i will assume that there is no smoke without fire and Chelsea really are considering a bid.
The second rumour is saying that Birmingham are trying to bring Andriy Shevchenko back to England in January to try and save them from relegation. I know that Sheva isn’t technically still a Chelsea player, but i am so used to him being on the books but not playing that if feels like he never left!
What do you think it is that attracts Carson Yeung to Shevchenko? All those years of watching him on Chelsea’s bench? Or perhaps the brilliant penalty miss against England a few weeks ago? Anyway, this is one rumour i simply do not believe. At 33 he is just not good enough for the Premiership.
The Nicola Anelka story isn’t really a transfer rumour, more a “I wish we hadn’t let him go” story! Jamie Carragher was talking about Rafael Benitez’s brilliant transfer strategy(!) when he decided to not offer Anelka a permanent contract after spending a few months on loan at Anfield in 2001.
“I think it’s a bit strong to say it was one of the worst decisions ever, but it’s fair to say it was a mistake,” said Carragher.
“You look at Anelka now – he was top scorer in the Premier League last season. It’s in the past now, but it was probably something that never went our way.”
Instead of buying Anelka, Benitez instead decided to spend £12m on El Hadji Diouf instead! An excellent bit of business for the Spaniard!
