Chelsea duo of David Luiz and Oscar been linked to Barcelona by Daily telegraph is a surprise and at the same time not a surprise. David Luiz has been linked with a move to Barcelona for 2 windows now and a bid of around 35m pounds was reportedly rejected by Chelsea. It is no secret that Barca are in need of a central defender as Pique is now a shadow of his old self, Puyol is likely to leave, Batra lacks experience and Mascherano and Song are midfielders, they are in desperate need of a central defender.
It came as a surprise to many that Barca did nothing to add to their backline both last summer and in the winter transfer window too but they are expected to go all out in the summer to sign a centre back and mount another serious title challenge next season. Luiz enjoys a cult hero status at Chelsea; the fans love him and would want him to stay at the club for a very long time but a deal is possible if Barca is willing to pay the right price for him. Chelsea spent almost 50m pounds on Luiz-Matic transfer so I don’t see them selling for anything less than that. With the purchase of Zouma from Saint Etinne, and Ivanovic’s versatility, Chelsea might just cash in on the Brazilian.
He is error prone at the back but can be very helpful in the midfield (where his mistakes can’t be too costly). If Chelsea sign a midfielder, I see a deal happening but for much more than the reported 25m and if Chelsea doesn’t sign a midfielder Luiz will not be sold instead he might find himself playing in the midfield. However, I honestly don’t understand the Oscar link. He is Mourinho’s golden boy, the epitome of hard-work, grit and selflessness.
He is full of running, never afraid to make a tackle; he might not be as creative as most CAMs but he arguably the pick of the lot considering that Mourinho preferred him to Mata who is more creative. There is absolutely no chance of Chelsea selling Oscar to Barcelona and I don’t think they need him.
