Chelsea are rumoured to be lining up a loan bid for David Villa, who has been out of favour at Barcelona of late.
Chelsea have all but finalised Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, leaving Fernando Torres as the Blues only out-and-out striker come January.
Chelsea have used Victor Moses in that position, but he will be joining Nigeria for their African Cup of Nations tournament next month, along with John Obi Mikel.
Torres has struggled for consistency this season, going nearly 2 months without a Premer League goal at one point, and Chelsea are looking to bring in some competition up front to hopefully bring the best out of the £50million striker.
David Villa has an understanding with Nando having played together for the Spanish national team over the years, with Villa scoring 53 in his 85 international appearances, compared to Torres’ 31 goals in 101.
Oriol Romeu has admitted he is excited at the prospect of his Ex-Barcelona team-mates arrival. The injured defensive midfielder said: “I don’t know what Villa’s situation is, but if a great player like him comes, the record goalscorer with the national team, he would be welcomed and we would be happy.”
The 31 year-old would not fit Chelsea’s plans in the long run however, with the Blues hierarchy aiming to build a young gifted squad, and are widely expected to invest in Willian from Shakhtar, as back-up to Radamel Falcao who may decide to see out the season with Athletico Madrid.
I would hate to miss out on Falcao, and think we should do all we can to sign the Colombian in January. On Villa, I believe he would be a good addition to the team, with him being able to play out wide in support of Torres, as well as play through the centre as the lone striker.
It is yet to be seen whether the Spaniard could manage the physicality of the Premier League, but I believe with his prolific record for Spain, as well as Valencia and Barcelona he would be able to adapt effectively. David Villa until the summer and then Falcao from then on? I hope the Columbian arrives soon…
