The ex-Chelsea striker Joe Cole has had a rough start to his career at Anfield. He somehow managed to get sent off against Arsenal on his debut, and now he has missed a penalty in his second match.
But at least Liverpool have taken a slender lead in this Europa Cup Qualifier, but it is never easy to go away to Turkey and return with a result. Roy Hodgson was more upset about a last minte disallowed goal than the penalty miss.
“I think we probably deserved more but we can only blame ourselves,” he said. “We missed a penalty and if you do that you cannot blame anyone else.
“I told the players we needed more intensity at the break because we were lucky to be leading 1-0 at half-time. The first half was not as good as it should have been. With the second-half performance we deserved a second goal, which would have made the journey to Turkey more comfortable. Now it will not be comfortable at all.
“Whether the margin will be enough we will only know next Thursday, but it is good at least to be going with a lead and not having conceded a goal.”
Having seen the replay, it looks like a perfectly good second goal to me. But Liverpool will still be favourites to go through, but now it will not be easy………
