A young German team were thought to struggle in this tournament, but they handed a footballing lessons to the pluckky Aussies. They were in total control of the game from beginning to end, with four different strikers, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller and Cacau getting on the scoresheet.

The Germany coach Joachim Loew was extremely pleased with the performance, but thinks his team can still get better!

“It was very important that we won because we gained a lot of self confidence,” said Low.

“We can now hope to make the last 16 with just one more win. All players were very, very focused. We did many things right but this is just the start.”

“I think the way we set up our attacks is something we’ve been working on intensively,”

“But we’ve also worked on how we play off the ball – to move into unused space. We were very good on the ball tonight, and we created beautiful goals.”

“There is still room for improvement,” said Low. “Our defence was excellent, they performed very well and I was very happy with our counter-attacks.

“But in terms of closing the space between defence and midfield, I felt sometimes we were too defensive.

“We will work on this.”

If they het better they will be unbeatable. They are definitely the best team we have seen so far.
