France were ignominiously sent home from the World Cup with just a single point for their troubles, and their stay in South Africa will certainly be remembered more for the problems off the pitch than on it!
South Africa scored an early goal, and then when Gourcuff was sent off after just 20 minutes, France just couldn’t find a way back into the game. France were 2-0 down by half-time, and although Chelsea’s Florent Malouda gave France a consolation goal, it was too little too late.
It is just a shame that the three points wasn’t enough to take the hosts through to the next round.
The Everton and South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar said after the game: “People can never say we didn’t do our best but through football we have brought the whole nation together,” Pienaar said. “We have shown that we are one country and that’s all we need to say. France reached the last World Cup final and all their players play for big clubs so we have to be proud of beating a team of their standing.”
