The South Africans were hoping to extend their run of 13 games unbeaten last night when they took on the South American minnows Uruguay, but they didn’t reckon on the ex-Man Utd striker Diego Forlan being on such fantastic form.
Forlan scored a cracking goal after 24 minutes and gradually looked more and more in control of the game.
When the South African keeper got sent off 15 minutes from time it was all over as a contest as Forlan netted brilliantly from the spot.
Against ten men Uruguay were never in an danger and Ferreira made it 3-0 with an easy tap-in in the dying seconds. It is now looking likely that South Africa will be the first host nation ever not to qualify out of the group stages.
