Man Utd found themselves already four points behind Chelsea going into this game, so it was vital that they took all three points. Berbatov scored twice to put United clear in front, and then twice Steven Gerrard took Liverpool back to level pegging, but it was Bebatov who got the last word with a winner at the death.
But the United manager Alex Ferguson never thought the result was in doubt as his team dominated throughout. He said: “From thinking to myself ‘it’s going to be 10’ we ended up at 2-2. It was a travesty of a scoreline then – but a great result at the end.
“They (Liverpool) didn’t offer anything and depended on decisions from the linesman to get back in the game. Edwin van der Sar had no saves to make, Paul Scholes controlled the midfield and we looked dangerous up front with Dimitar and Nani – I couldn’t see us losing the game.”
But it was only with five minutes to go when Berbatov scored his third that Fergie could breath easy. Watch out for the Bulgarians brilliant second goal……
